Precious metals like silver and gold have held their value even though other economic parameters have been unsteady and uncertain which makes them good stocks to invest in now. This is why any investments made in silver and gold have proved to be more reliable than those made into bonds and stocks as these precious metal investments have not fluctuated in value as those in bonds and stocks. Investing in a gold exchange traded fund is a relatively new instrument and this has made it an option for investors that has proved attractive.

Previous investments made in gold required that you look for a safe house to store the gold in. The high value of the gold also required you to go in for insurance for the gold stock. It was also quite difficult to transport or move gold bars and hence the selling any portion of a stock was quite often a hindrance. All this has changed with the introduction of gold funds ETF. It ensured that trading in gold was as simple as the trading in stocks and this also allowed trading in other commodities like water, natural gas and other precious materials, thus enabling an investor to broaden his portfolio of investment. This was previously a difficult thing to do because of the size and nature of such commodities.

Previously investors actually traded in gold bars physically, but the present gold ETF allows you to trade in even fractions of an ounce of the precious metal. This has greatly made the investment option in gold to be one that a larger number of investors have entered as they are able to do so within the limits of their invested capital.

The previous restriction of gold bars needed a substantial capital outlay even to make a start in gold trading. Most brokers nowadays do suggest that trading in precious metals should be part of a good investment portfolio; advice that a large number of investors now follow.
